Miryang Strawberries Receive Geographical Indication Status

Miryang City in Gyeongsangnam-do announced on March 3 that “Miryang strawberries” have officially received geographical indication (GI) status.

A geographical indication is a certification that protects agricultural products linked to a specific region, allowing them to use the regional name on their labels. The designation is intended to strengthen consumer confidence in product quality and enhance the value of regional brands.

The application was submitted by the Miryang Strawberry Producers Cooperative Association. With the registration, strawberries produced by 539 farms in the Miryang area can now be distributed with the official GI mark.

Miryang has also been expanding its strawberry industry through a range of initiatives. In Samnangjin-eup, where strawberry cultivation in the region is known to have begun, the city established a “Strawberry Culture Village” and operates an industry-related education program. It has also worked with food research institutes and universities to develop processed products such as Miryang strawberry beer, strawberry cream glutinous rice cakes, and a premium distilled liquor called “Sattala 21.”

In addition, the city developed the brand “Miryang Strawberry 1943” as part of efforts to strengthen the brand identity of Miryang strawberries.

Miryang City expects the GI registration to further boost brand competitiveness. The city plans to enhance quality management and consumer trust while expanding nationwide distribution and exploring premium markets.
