Namdanghang Port in Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, is known for its wide range of seasonal seafood throughout the year. In winter, saejogae (egg cockle) becomes one of the area’s most sought-after local specialties. While shrimp, rockfish, blue crab, and other seafood are available year-round, visitor demand during the colder months tends to center on saejogae, which is at its peak from December through early spring.

The 23rd Hongseong Namdanghang Saejogae Festival will take place from January 17 to February 22, 2026, at a designated event area near Namdanghang Port. The festival features opening events, stage performances, and visitor programs. After the festival ends, saejogae sales are expected to continue from February 23 through April 30, providing additional flexibility for travel planning during the season.

Saejogae harvested in the Namdanghang and Cheonsuman Bay area reaches prime condition from winter to early spring, developing a firm texture with mild sweetness and savory depth. It is a high-protein, low-fat seafood rich in iron and taurine and is commonly consumed as a seasonal food for winter energy replenishment.

The most common preparation is a hot pot or shabu-style dish, in which the shellfish is briefly blanched in broth to preserve its texture. Other options include seasoned raw dishes, lightly blanched sushi-style servings, and grilled combinations, offering a variety of ways to enjoy the ingredient.

Festival programming includes shell-opening contests, audience-participation performances, and local cultural stages. Selected dates also feature guest singer appearances, adding live entertainment alongside food offerings.

Visitors may encounter congestion during weekends and peak hours, making weekday or early-day visits more convenient. Coastal winter conditions can feel significantly colder due to wind, so warm and wind-resistant clothing is recommended. As the sales season continues beyond the festival period, visiting from late February onward may be preferable for those seeking to avoid peak crowds.
