Stable output by Kia and GGM as EV and hybrid vehicle production continues to expand.

Gwangju’s automotive industry continues to play a central role in the local economy, backed by steady production and record-high export performance.

According to Gwangju Metropolitan City, total vehicle production in the region reached 580,668 units in 2025, marking the fourth consecutive year that output exceeded 500,000 vehicles. This was the second-highest annual figure on record, following the all-time high of 586,100 units in 2023.

Annual production has remained strong, with 522,479 units in 2022, 586,100 units in 2023, 566,811 units in 2024, and 580,668 units in 2025.

Exports in 2025 reached a record 391,207 units, driven by strong overseas demand for high value-added eco-friendly vehicles, including electric and hybrid models, as well as popular SUV models.

In particular, Kia’s flagship models, the Sportage and Seltos, continue to perform well in global markets, while the transition toward EV-centered production lines is also gaining momentum.

Gwangju Global Motors (GGM) is expanding production of electric vehicles such as the Casper Electric as its manufacturing processes stabilize, supporting the region’s shift toward eco-friendly vehicles and strengthening overall production capacity.

Last year, Gwangju further strengthened its position as a hub for eco-friendly vehicle production. Kia Autoland Gwangju increased the share of hybrid and electric versions of its main SUV models, while GGM also established an EV-focused production system, reshaping the local automotive industry toward higher value-added manufacturing.

Building on these achievements, Gwangju plans to accelerate the development of future mobility industries this year. The city will support business transitions for local auto parts suppliers in preparation for the shift to software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and strengthen cooperation between automakers and parts companies to reinforce the regional production base.
