The Wonju Usan General Industrial Complex, a key driver of Korea’s industrial growth in the 1970s, is preparing for a new phase of development fueled by urban regeneration and industrial upgrading. Established during the country’s rapid industrial expansion, the complex was located near the former intercity and express bus terminals, serving as a commercial center for industrial workers and surrounding communities. As manufacturing activity expanded, the complex evolved into an important pillar of the local economy.

Today, the industrial complex is entering a new stage of transformation through urban regeneration initiatives. In 2021, Usan-dong was selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Urban Regeneration New Deal Project, leading to the development of the Gangwon Social Economy Innovation Town on the long-vacant former terminal site. The restoration of the Dangyecheon ecological stream and local festivals in partnership with Sangji University have also helped revitalize the surrounding commercial area and improve the neighborhood environment.

Now marking its 50th anniversary, the industrial complex continues to maintain a stable industrial base while sustaining steady growth. One of its early tenant companies, Samyang Foods, has played a leading role in Korea’s instant noodle industry and has gained international recognition through its Buldak brand, firmly establishing itself as a global food company. The company stands as a representative success story of the industrial complex’s long-term competitiveness.

Building on this foundation, Wonju City is outlining a new blueprint for the complex’s second phase of growth. The area was selected in 2024 for the “Vibrant and Beautiful Street Plus Project,” a national program supporting industrial district renewal, and the design phase is nearing completion. Full-scale implementation is scheduled to begin in 2026.

The city plans to upgrade lighting along back roads surrounding the complex to improve pedestrian safety, with road improvements, expanded green spaces, and additional convenience facilities to be completed in stages by 2027. These measures are intended to enhance living and working conditions in the industrial area close to the urban core.

Looking further ahead, Wonju City is seeking designation as a “Culture-Led Industrial Complex” in 2026. By creating a space where industry and culture coexist, the city aims to strengthen the brand value of the district for local communities, workers, and businesses, positioning the industrial complex as a sustainable engine of future growth.
