Namdanghang Port in Hongseong is experiencing a strong harvest of veined rapa whelk, bringing renewed energy to the harbor and surrounding community. As catches continue to rise, the positive impact is extending beyond fishing crews to nearby markets and local businesses.

Fishing operations remain steady in the waters near Jukdo Island in Cheonsuman Bay. Visitor numbers have increased since the Namdanghang Saejogae Festival opened on January 17, further strengthening the port’s profile as a winter seafood destination.

Many visitors who come to enjoy Saejogae (egg cockles) are also purchasing veined rapa whelk, driving higher activity at seafood markets and nearby restaurants. Seafood brokers from across the country are visiting the port to secure supplies, keeping the harbor busy throughout the day.

Captain Kim Man-jin, who operates a fishing vessel in Namdanghang, said harvesting began on January 12 and has averaged about 1.5 tons per day. Cumulative catches have already reached approximately 20 tons, with total production expected to reach around 80 tons by March.

Veined rapa whelk, scientifically known as Rapana venosa, typically inhabit sandy and gravelly seabeds at depths of around 10 meters along the west coast. They remain hidden among rocks during the day and become more active at night while feeding. The species is widely regarded as being at its best in flavor during the winter season.

The Namdanghang area also offers nearby attractions such as the Hongseong Sky Tower, Namdanghang Marine Fountain Park, Namdang Rainbow Road, and several nighttime scenic spots, allowing visitors to enjoy both local cuisine and coastal sightseeing during the winter months.
