Ganghwa Begins First Winter Transplanting of Local Cucumbers Despite Cold Wave

Farmers transplant cucumber seedlings inside a greenhouse in Ganghwa during winter cultivation

Ganghwa-gun has begun the year’s first greenhouse cucumber transplanting at farming facilities in Bureun-myeon, marking the start of full-scale agricultural operations despite ongoing winter cold conditions. Controlled indoor growing environments allow farmers to maintain stable production schedules even during periods of low temperatures.

Locally grown cucumbers in Ganghwa are known for their crisp texture and high moisture content, and they have gained strong recognition among consumers and at major wholesale markets in Seoul. As greenhouse cultivation technology continues to improve, the crop has become increasingly suitable for early and reliable winter production.

Typically, cucumbers are transplanted in mid-March and harvested around May. However, Ganghwa-gun has steadily expanded advanced agricultural facilities, including multi-span greenhouses, multi-layer thermal curtains, and air-source heat pump systems. This has extended the transplanting window from mid-January through March, giving farmers greater flexibility in production planning.

Farms that have started transplanting this season will focus on root establishment, temperature and humidity control, and early pest and disease prevention to ensure healthy crop growth. These management practices are expected to support consistent yields and stable product quality throughout the winter season.

The Ganghwa Agricultural Technology Center plans to continue providing field-based technical support and policy assistance to maintain stable winter production, as locally grown cucumbers remain a core agricultural product for the region.
