Tongyeong City is moving forward with plans to develop a new coastal attraction that will allow visitors to enjoy panoramic views of Tongyeonghang Port in a safe and immersive environment. The city announced that a groundbreaking ceremony for the “Tongyeonghang Port Ocean Viewcation Project” will be held at 2 p.m. on May 21 near the Pencil Lighthouse area in Misu-dong, marking the start of full-scale construction.

The project was included in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Southern Coastal Regional Tourism Development Plan established in 2023. It aims to create a multi-purpose tourism space that combines ocean-view facilities with walking experiences and adventure-style activities overlooking Tongyeonghang Port.

Key facilities include a 128-meter pedestrian main bridge connecting Docheon-dong and Misu-dong, a 138-meter skywalk designed to provide thrilling walking experiences with sea views, a 100-meter extreme climbing facility installed along the upper arch of the bridge, and elevators and access stairways allowing visitors to move from ground level to the bridge deck.

Nighttime lighting will be designed to reflect Tongyeong’s coastal identity and harmonize with the surrounding landscape. The project will also be linked to the city’s nighttime tourism initiatives, with the goal of creating a new landmark along the Tongyeonghang Port waterfront.

To prepare for construction, the city completed its master plan and feasibility study in February 2024, followed by the launch of detailed design work in June of the same year. Required administrative procedures, including marine use consultations, maritime traffic safety assessments, and public water occupancy permits, have all been completed.

Raon Industrial Development, based in Gyeongsangnam-do Province, has been selected as the contractor. A construction contract was signed in December 2025, and full-scale construction will begin after the groundbreaking ceremony.

While Tongyeonghang Port is widely known for its scenic views from Tongyeong Bridge and Chungmu Bridge, visitors have had limited opportunities to stop and fully enjoy the scenery from existing crossings. The city expects the new facility to provide a safer and more comfortable environment for both residents and tourists to appreciate the port’s landscape.

The surrounding area is also home to major cultural and historical attractions, including the Tongyeong Undersea Tunnel, Chakryangmyo Shrine, and the Kim Chun-su Memorial Hall, as well as a wide range of restaurants. The city anticipates that the project will help expand tourism routes and encourage longer visitor stays.

Tongyeong City plans to ensure that safety remains the top priority throughout construction while minimizing inconvenience to nearby residents. Officials expect the project to strengthen the city’s tourism infrastructure and contribute to revitalizing the local economy.
