City-run nursery facility to be built in 2026 to expand virus-free seedlings and improve quality.
Suncheon is moving ahead with plans to establish a stable supply system for high-quality strawberry seedlings, a key factor in successful strawberry cultivation. The initiative aims to build a sustainable nursery ecosystem that ensures a consistent supply of healthy planting materials to local farmers.
Through a recently selected regional specialty crop development project, the city plans to propagate healthy strawberry seedlings at facilities directly managed by the municipal government and distribute them to local farms through a structured, multi-stage supply system.
Under the plan, superior base seedlings provided by the Jeollanam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services will first be propagated at a city-run facility in Suncheon. The seedlings will then be propagated once more at designated hub farms before being supplied to general nursery farms. This step-by-step system is designed to allow the complete replacement of mother plants every two to three years, reducing the risk of virus infection and improving overall productivity.
By regularly replacing older plants with healthy seedlings, the city aims to enhance the overall quality and reliability of strawberry seedlings produced in the region.
A city-operated strawberry nursery facility scheduled for construction in 2026 will serve both as a distribution hub for virus-free seedlings and as a testing ground for advanced nursery technologies designed to respond to abnormal weather conditions. The facility will enable farmers to directly observe and evaluate the effectiveness of new techniques before adopting them.
Beginning next year, Suncheon plans to operate the nursery facility alongside a flower bud inspection laboratory to support scientific quality control. From 2027 onward, the city will expand support to include climate-responsive cultivation technologies and customized consulting services for both hub farms and general nursery operators.
Through these efforts, Suncheon aims to strengthen the competitiveness of its strawberry nursery industry and establish a more stable foundation for strawberry production across the region.
