Jeollanam-do has officially launched its regional esports team, marking a significant step in the province's efforts to foster a local gaming ecosystem. The inauguration ceremony was held on May 21 at the Jeonnam Information And Culture Industry Promotion Agency.
Key figures in attendance included Lee In-yong, Director of the Jeonnam Information And Culture Industry Promotion Agency, Nam Eun-oh, Vice President of the Jeonnam Esports Association, and Professor Lee Yoo-chan from Jeonnam Science College, along with the team’s coaches and players. The ceremony featured a briefing on the team’s formation, player introductions, and the official appointment of the coaching staff.
The Jeonnam Esports Team will compete in two game titles: PUBG Mobile and FC Mobile. The team consists of three experienced coaches and seven skilled players.
This initiative was made possible through the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Regional Esports League Support Project, which selected Jeollanam-do as a recipient of 57 million KRW in national funding to support the team's activities.
Starting with a national tournament on May 24, the team will represent Jeollanam-do in various esports competitions across Korea and internationally.
Jeollanam-do is also committed to growing its game industry through a broader strategy centered on the Jeonnam Global Game Center. Plans include supporting game production, nurturing professional talent, and strengthening cooperation with the Jeonnam Esports Association and the Jeonnam Information And Culture Industry Promotion Agency.
Kang Hyo-seok, Director of Jeollanam-do’s Culture Promotion Bureau, stated, “It is meaningful to launch an esports team rooted in our local community. We will fully support our players so they can perform at their best.” He added, “We will continue our efforts to expand the esports ecosystem, including plans to attract permanent esports venues that can help foster young talent and dreams.”
The launch of the Jeonnam Esports Team is expected to energize the regional game industry and offer new opportunities for local youth interested in professional gaming careers.
